Protecting your tax number and identity in Greece

Greece has no one-click “lock” on your tax number — there is no equivalent of the consumer freeze some other countries offer. Your protection is credential hygiene: guard your TaxisNet κλειδάριθμος and your verified mobile, and watch your myAADE messages. We say this plainly rather than imply a switch exists that doesn’t.

The honest finding

an extensive search of official sources found no consumer-facing “reserve / freeze my tax number against new credit or contracts” tool in Greece as of 2026. If you have seen such a feature in another country, do not assume Greece has the same — it does not, yet.

What actually protects you here

  • Credential-based access control. Your AFM alone is not enough to act on your behalf — transactions require your TaxisNet credentials (κλειδάριθμος), increasingly backed by an ΕΜΕπ-verified mobile and one-time SMS codes. Protecting the κλειδάριθμος is the real defence.
  • myAADE “My Messages”. AADE communicates through your personal digital mailbox; unexpected activity shows up there, so check it.
  • New biometric ID cards are positioned partly as fraud-reduction — harder to forge than the old paper IDs.

The Personal Number caveat

consolidating your identifiers under one Personal Number (Π.Α.) is convenient, but it also concentrates risk. Greek commentators have called for citizens to be able to audit the “digital traces” of their Π.Α. — a monitoring right rather than a freeze. Whether such a tool ships is not yet confirmed; watch for it.

Practical habits that matter

  • Never share your κλειδάριθμος, TaxisNet password or an OTP — no official body asks for them by phone, SMS or email.
  • Log in only by typing the official address yourself (aade.gr, gov.gr), never via links sent to you.
  • Keep your registered mobile and email current, so alerts and codes actually reach you.
  • If you suspect exposure, change your TaxisNet password immediately and check myAADE messages for activity you don’t recognise.

How not to get cheated

be sceptical of any service that offers — for a fee — to “protect”, “register” or “lock” your tax number. No such official lock exists to sell. The protection that works is free and behavioural: guard the login, watch the mailbox.
