The Personal Number (Π.Α.) — Greece’s new single identifier

Greece is rolling out a single Personal Number (Προσωπικός Αριθμός, Π.Α.) that links your tax number and social-security number under one lifelong identifier. It is free, obtained online or at a KEP, and it correlates the existing numbers rather than abolishing them — at least for now. Exact cut-over dates are still moving, so treat the timeline as policy-in-progress.

What it is

A unique, lifelong, unchanging identifier designed to become the one “key” for dealings with the Greek state. In format it adds three characters to your existing ID-card number and is embedded in the new biometric ID card and in Gov.gr Wallet.

What it does to the AFM and AMKA

officials state the AFM and AMKA registries are not abolished. The Π.Α. correlates them and is expected to progressively take over in transactions over roughly 2026–2028. So you still get and use your AFM and AMKA today.

How to get it

via the myInfo platform at pa.gov.gr (live since June 2025), or at a KEP or consulate. It requires TaxisNet credentials and an ΕΜΕπ-verified mobile number. Free of charge.

For foreigners

eligibility tracks whether you hold an AFM/AMKA; residents abroad can issue it via a consulate or online. People not entitled to an AFM/AMKA can still obtain an ID document without a Π.Α.

The money and risk angle

consolidating identifiers is convenient, but Greek commentators have flagged that one central number also concentrates identity-theft and surveillance risk. There is, so far, no consumer “lock” on the Π.Α. — see protecting your tax number and identity. The practical takeaway is credential hygiene, not a false sense that a single number is automatically safer.

How not to get cheated

the Π.Α. is issued free through pa.gov.gr or a KEP. Watch the official sources (gov.gr, pa.gov.gr) for the real deadlines — and ignore anyone selling urgency (“register your Personal Number now or lose access”) as a hook to harvest your TaxisNet login.
