Gov.gr Wallet — Greece’s digital ID app, and what it does for foreigners
What it is
A government app (iOS/Android, also at wallet.gov.gr) that holds your digital identity documents and presents them via a refreshing QR code. Within Greece these carry the same validity as the physical documents. It is not a travel document — it is not valid for crossing borders.
What you need to use it
personal TaxisNet credentials and a mobile number verified in the National Communication Registry (ΕΜΕπ / EMEp). Without those two, the app cannot be activated.
The foreigner limitation
because the Greek digital ID card is issued only to citizens, a foreign resident usually cannot load a Greek digital ID into the Wallet. However, once you hold a Greek driving licence, the digital driving licence can be stored and used as in-country identification. Whether residence permits will be added to the Wallet in future is not yet confirmed.
Why it matters
day to day, the Wallet saves you carrying physical documents for domestic checks and many in-person services. For foreigners it is a “nice to have” that depends on first holding a qualifying Greek document — not a substitute for your residence permit, which remains your primary ID.
How not to get cheated
the Wallet is the official gov.gr app and is free. Only install it from the official app stores or wallet.gov.gr, and never enter your TaxisNet login on a link someone sends you claiming to be “the Wallet”. The QR code proves a document to a verifier — it is not something to send to strangers.
