Who supervises your money in Greece

Banks are supervised by the Bank of Greece (and the ECB for the big four). Investment firms, funds and the stock exchange are supervised by the HCMC. The deposit and investor schemes are run by TEKE. Knowing which body covers a provider tells you which register to check before you send money.

Bank of Greece (Τράπεζα της Ελλάδος)

the national central bank and prudential supervisor. It supervises banks, payment institutions and e-money institutions (EMIs), plus insurance and leasing. Its register is where you confirm a bank or a payment app is licensed.

European Central Bank (ECB)

directly supervises the “significant” banks — Greece’s four systemic banks (Piraeus, Alpha, Eurobank, NBG) — jointly with the Bank of Greece.

HCMC — Hellenic Capital Market Commission (Επιτροπή Κεφαλαιαγοράς): the capital-markets regulator. It supervises investment firms, fund managers, crowdfunding platforms, and the Athens Exchange, and it publishes a warning list of unauthorised firms. For anything investment-related, this is the register to check.

TEKE — Hellenic Deposit and Investment Guarantee Fund

not a supervisor but the payout body — it runs the €100,000 deposit guarantee, the €30,000 investor compensation, and resolution financing.

The key point — supervision is not a guarantee

the Bank of Greece supervises both banks and EMIs. An EMI can be perfectly legal and fully supervised, yet still carry no deposit guarantee — see safeguarded ≠ guaranteed. “Regulated” and “guaranteed” are two different things.

How this differs from some countries

Greece splits the job — banking (Bank of Greece) and capital markets (HCMC) are separate regulators. So when you verify a provider, you first have to ask “is this a bank/payment firm, or an investment firm?” to know which register to look in.

How not to get cheated

match the provider to its regulator and check the right public register before funding anything — banks/EMIs at the Bank of Greece, investment firms at the HCMC, and EU-passported firms at the EU-wide registers. The step-by-step is in how to verify a provider.
